What is Tirzepatide and how does it work?
Tirzepatide is a dual GIP and GLP-1 receptor agonist developed for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), obesity, obstructive sleep apnea, and nonalcoholic steatohepatitis. GLP-1 and GIP are incretin hormones that play a role in appetite suppression and digestion. Incretins are released after food consumption, stimulating insulin release and reducing glucagon secretion from the liver. The medication also slows gastric emptying (the rate at which food leaves the stomach) and is known to interact with ghrelin hormones, which regulate hunger. GIP can act in the central nervous system (CNS) to lower food intake and reduce body weight. In addition to improving lipid handling in the periphery, GIP action in the CNS may provide further metabolic benefits by reducing energy consumption, especially when combined with GLP-1. Tirzepatide may lead to appetite suppression, improved glucose disposal, and weight loss, particularly when paired with diet and exercise.
Potential side effects:
The most common side effects of Tirzepatide treatment may include nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, constipation, stomach pain, headache, fatigue, upset stomach, dizziness, bloating, belching, gas, stomach flu, and heartburn. Tirzepatide may also cause serious side effects, including pancreatitis, gallbladder problems, increased risk of low blood sugar, kidney problems, allergic reactions, elevated heart rate, depression, or thoughts of suicide. Tirzepatide should not be used in conjunction with other Tirzepatide-containing compounds, GLP-1 agonists, or GIP agonists.
How we help you lose weight:
At Expedient Med, we view medications like Tirzepatide as useful tools to complement lifelong healthy habits, such as eating a plant-based diet and engaging in regular, moderate-intensity exercise. The foundation of health—not just weight loss—lies in our habits, and medication helps you reach your goals. We have seen profound benefits in our patients, and we’d love to help you achieve your weight loss goals.
What to expect:
Schedule of visits: If qualified, we will prescribe medication based on clinical indications. During the first month, there will be a minimum of two visits. The first visit assesses whether you clinically qualify for Tirzepatide treatment. The second visit evaluates your response to the medication and monitors side effects, which may include ordering labs to check for potential issues. Follow-up visits will occur monthly. Once you reach a safe, lowest effective maintenance dose, follow-ups can be scheduled every three months to monitor progress and side effects. The program operates on a month-to-month basis with no obligation to commit long-term.
We are committed to improving your health in the most affordable way and hope to be part of your health journey for years to come.
